F50 eating disorder codes for nutrition claims

The short answerCategory F50 covers eating disorders. Since October 1, 2024, anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder need a severity character, from mild to extreme, plus in remission and unspecified. F50.01, F50.02, F50.2 and F50.81 are now headers that reject if billed. ARFID is F50.82. Aetna's nutrition policy covers F50.00-F50.9, and federal parity rules apply to eating disorder benefits in plans that cover them.

Eating disorder work is some of the most intensive outpatient nutrition care there is: weekly visits, team coordination, and documentation that has to satisfy both medical and behavioral health reviewers. The F50 codes were rebuilt in the FY2025 update. Claims that still carry F50.2 or F50.81 as complete codes are rejected as invalid.

What changed, and when

The F50 category excludes anorexia NOS (R63.0) and polyphagia (R63.2), and, as Excludes2, feeding difficulties (R63.3-) and feeding disorders of infancy or childhood (F98.2-). A symptom code isn't a substitute for an eating disorder diagnosis the provider hasn't made.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ICD-10 code for binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder is F50.81-, with a sixth character for severity: F50.810 mild, F50.811 moderate, F50.812 severe, F50.813 extreme, F50.814 in remission, F50.819 unspecified. F50.81 alone is a header since October 1, 2024.

What is the ICD-10 code for ARFID?

F50.82, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Its inclusion term covers ARFID in remission. It has no severity characters.

Can a dietitian assign the eating disorder severity?

No. The eating disorder diagnosis and its severity come from the treating provider's documentation, such as the psychiatrist, therapist or physician. If severity isn't documented, the unspecified code applies, or ask the provider.

Can I add a BMI code for an eating disorder patient?

Yes, as a secondary code. The ICD-10-CM guidelines list anorexia as an example of an associated diagnosis that allows a Z68 BMI code. Don't use Z68 during pregnancy.

Does insurance cover nutrition counseling for eating disorders?

Often, yes. Aetna's CPB 0049 lists F50.00-F50.9 as covered diagnoses for nutritional counseling. Under the 21st Century Cures Act, plans that cover eating disorder benefits must apply mental health parity rules to them. Verify whether the plan handles your visits under the medical or behavioral health benefit.
