Kalix Alternatives for Dietitians Who Bill Insurance (2026)
Kalix alternatives for RDs: Practice Better, Healthie, SimplePractice, Nutrium and Farela compared on eligibility, AI notes, claims and price, with when to stay.
Disclosure: Farela is one of the alternatives below, and we wrote this. Facts about every other product come from its own public pricing page or help center, checked on September 28, 2026. Where a vendor's page doesn't mention something, we say so instead of guessing.
Kalix earned its place honestly. It's one of the few EHRs built for dietitians first, it runs US insurance claims, and it costs less than almost anything else in the category. So if you're searching for Kalix alternatives, it's usually not because Kalix is bad. It's because of one specific gap that has started costing you time: eligibility you check somewhere else, notes you type after every visit, or claims you still code line by line.
Name your gap first. The right alternative depends entirely on it, and for some of you the right answer is to stay.
What Kalix does well
- Price. The pricing page lists Standard at $27 a month ($270 a year) with unlimited clients. Virtual Practice, at $47, adds the client portal, app and telehealth.
- A cheap, unlimited clearinghouse. The Kalix Managed Clearinghouse is $15 a month per billing provider Tax ID, with unlimited claims, insurers and rendering providers, and automatic remittance posting. For comparison, Claim.MD's own plans run from $30 to $120 a month on its pricing page.
- RD-native thinking. Kalix's help center explains charting for insurance billing in MNT terms: time for timed codes, diagnoses the intervention addresses, 97802/97803/97804.
- Nutrition integrations like Cronometer and Fullscript are listed on the Standard plan.
If your practice is small, mostly telehealth or in-person with light volume, and you're comfortable coding your own claims, Kalix is probably still your best value.
The gaps that send RDs looking
- Eligibility outside the EHR. Kalix's Claim.MD setup article (updated March 2025) says Kalix "does not currently have eligibility-checking functionality" and points you to the Claim.MD portal. That's a second login before every new client.
- Notes are typed. Telehealth transcription and summarization are listed for Virtual Plus ($67, coming soon when we checked). On the other plans, the note after a 60-minute initial assessment is yours to write.
- Codes and units are yours. Like most EHRs, Kalix submits what you enter. It won't pick 97802 or 97803 or count 15-minute units from the visit. Our MNT units calculator helps, but it's still a step per visit.
- Client-facing features cost more. Portal, app and telehealth start at Virtual Practice ($47), and video storage is sold separately on Standard and Virtual Practice.

Who each alternative fits
Practice Better, if you want eligibility and claims in one place and your practice also sells programs or packages. Its Insurance Billing FAQ confirms eligibility checks, claim submission and ERA sync through your own Claim.MD account (checked roughly every 12 hours). You'll pay more than Kalix: Professional is $69 a month plus your Claim.MD plan. See what that stack still leaves manual in Practice Better + Claim.MD.
Healthie, if you're growing into a group or need a platform with an API. Budget for the Essentials plan plus the Claim.MD integration, and note that Healthie asks you to transfer an existing Claim.MD account to it. Details in Healthie alternatives, which covers the same trade-offs from the other side.
SimplePractice, if you share the practice with therapists. For MNT specifically, read our SimplePractice MNT billing guide first: unit billing defaults to 1 unit, and claims cost at least $0.39 each from October 1, 2026.
Nutrium, only if meal plans are the heart of your service and you don't need to bill US insurance from the same tool. Its pricing page lists plans from $25 a month (monthly) and focuses on meal planning, tracking and scheduling; it doesn't mention claims.
Farela, if your gap is gaps 1 to 3 together. Farela records the visit (video in Farela, in person or by phone), writes the structured MNT note with a PES statement and units counted from the visit time, and drafts the claim with CPT, ICD-10, modifiers and place of service. You review it and submit through your own Claim.MD account. Eligibility runs through Claim.MD, payments are tracked from the ERA, and cash visits are invoiced through Stripe.
When Farela is not the right Kalix alternative
- You want the lowest cash cost. Kalix Standard plus its clearinghouse is $42 a month, flat. Farela's EHR is free, but billing is 3.9% of what insurers pay plus your own Claim.MD plan (from $30 a month). Once insurers pay you more than a few hundred dollars a month, Kalix costs less in dollars. Farela's case is the hours it takes off your plate, not the invoice. Run your own numbers with the method in best billing software for dietitians.
- Your clients use a portal or app. Farela isn't a patient-facing EMR. There are no client logins, food logs or meal plans.
- You bill outside the US. Kalix serves Canada, Australia and New Zealand too. Farela's billing is built around US claims.
Before you switch
- Export everything first: client records, notes, documents and superbills.
- Finish in-flight claims in Kalix. A claim that's already out should be worked to payment where it started. The timely filing calculator shows how long you have for anything still unbilled.
- Plan the clearinghouse move. If you used Kalix's managed clearinghouse, your next tool needs its own payer and ERA enrollments. ERAs go to one clearinghouse per NPI and Tax ID, so time the switch. Our Claim.MD page walks through enrollment.
- Test with three real visits, from eligibility to a paid ERA, before moving the whole caseload.
The short version
Stay on Kalix if price is what matters most and you're fine coding your own claims. Move to Practice Better or Healthie if you want eligibility inside the EHR and client-facing programs. Choose SimplePractice for a shared multi-discipline practice. Look at Farela if the time you want back is the note and the claim.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kalix still a good EHR for dietitians in 2026?
Yes, for many solo RDs. Its pricing page (checked September 28, 2026) lists the Standard plan at $27 a month with unlimited clients, and its managed clearinghouse at $15 a month per billing Tax ID with unlimited claims and automatic remittance posting. On price for a dietitian-specific EHR with US claims, it is hard to beat.
Does Kalix check insurance eligibility?
Kalix's Claim.MD setup article (updated March 2025) says Kalix does not currently have eligibility checking and that eligibility is done in the Claim.MD portal. Ask Kalix whether that has changed before you decide, since help articles can lag the product.
Does Kalix have an AI scribe?
Kalix's pricing page lists telehealth transcription and summarization on its Virtual Plus plan ($67 a month, marked coming soon when we checked). The Standard and Virtual Practice plans don't list it, so most RDs on those plans type notes or use a separate scribe.
What is the best Kalix alternative for insurance billing?
It depends on what you're missing. Practice Better or Healthie if you want eligibility checks inside the EHR through Claim.MD; SimplePractice if you share a practice with therapists; Farela if the note and the claim after each visit are the real time sink. Nutrium is a meal-planning tool and doesn't list US insurance billing on its pricing page.
Can I keep using Claim.MD if I leave Kalix?
If you connected your own Claim.MD account rather than Kalix's managed clearinghouse, the account is yours, and Practice Better, Healthie and Farela all connect to Claim.MD. If you used the managed clearinghouse, plan new payer and ERA enrollments before you move, because ERAs go to one clearinghouse per NPI and Tax ID.
